Are you concerned?
sigh... sian.
As expected, class this morning was extremely boring. It's really not a good idea to be observed by 2 supervisors. The students were extremely well-behaved. That's not a good thing. They looked really oppressed and unresponsive. What you see is really not their true self. Sigh...
I went to do relief in a class today. It was tough. And it is also the first time in my life that someone actually say I look like an "ah lian"... WHAT?!!? I think I'm too lax with them.
A notorious boy said something which made a lot of sense to me.
He commented about someone else. That a teacher should stop students from fighting in the class and not ask them to go outside the class and 'settle'. A teacher should be encouraging and not always put students down. They are already demoralised. There's no need to add salt on their wounds. A teacher should show care and concern to his/her students irregardless of how good or bad their results are. And much more.
I totally agree and I'll remember what he said. I suddenly recalled the results of the evaluation I asked my kids to do. Most of them wanted me to scold them more often, be stricter and punish them when necessary. It was a surprise to me at first.
After some reflections, I realised that they do know when they are well-behaved or misbehaved. They do know what is right and wrong. They want to be scolded not because they enjoy it but they need the concern. They need adults to reinforce the good ideas and behaviour. It's hard to control. They know, we know. That's why they need encouragement and chances to learn. Sometimes, they do it on purpose. Attention seeking? However, the scolding has to be reasonable. If it's insult, that's a totally different issue.
I don't know if I am right or wrong. This is just what I guessed and I need people to tell me if my guess is right. Otherwise, how can I improve? I do need concern and encouragement too, you know? And I'm human too. We all make mistakes and we all want to learn from mistakes.
Gary taught me how to add the tag board. Just give me time to do it.
Right now, I wana say, "I DON'T WANA TEACH ENGLISH ANYMORE!!!!!"
Aughhhhhhhhh.......... papers, papers and more papers. When can I finish marking them?
It torturous.
